If You Don’t Know Anything About The Freedom Center…

Jenifer and Dave recently gave a presentation for a Concerned Women for America meeting at which they explained what the Freedom Center is all about.  Fortunately, our friend Alex Rife was there to film the presentation so that we can now make it available for anyone who wants to learn more about the constitutional ideals the Freedom Center stands for and how we’re fighting on behalf of individual liberty and limited government for all Americans.

Freedom Center Files First U.S. Supreme Court Case!

Today the Freedom Center of Missouri asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review Kansas City Premier Apartments v. Missouri Real Estate Commission in order to clarify that whenever a citizen challenges a law that restricts speech protected by the First Amendment, the government must show substantial evidence proving why the restriction is necessary. Despite more than a dozen U.S. Supreme Court decisions establishing this principle, at least ten state supreme courts continue to uphold speech restrictions without requiring the government…

Two More Filings at the Missouri Supreme Court

Two More Filings at the Missouri Supreme Court

Earlier this week the Freedom Center filed documents related to two of our cases with the Missouri Supreme Court. The first filing addresses the Court’s opinion in our recent Kansas City Premier Apartments case. While the majority determined that at least part of KCPA’s speech was forbidden by state law and not protected under the First Amendment, it also said that KCPA would be exempt from regulation if it “merely wanted to advertise or provide information.” Ryan and Tiffany would…

FCMo Update – July 2011

FCMo Update – July 2011

Friends of the Freedom Center, It has been a fantastic month for the First Amendment. Not only has the U.S. Supreme Court continued its trend toward severely limiting the government’s authority to interfere with speech, yesterday we got the very exciting news that our friends at the Institute for Justice won a major free speech victory before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals! These rulings may have enormous implications for all sorts of government limitations on expressive freedom – including…

Free Expression and Civil Disobedience

Free Expression and Civil Disobedience

Federal law currently makes it illegal to engage in “speechmaking” and “public expression of views… which has the effect or propensity to draw a crowd or onlookers” on the grounds of a national memorial without first getting the government’s permission. This regulation recently led to some shockingly physical arrests at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial of citizens who were doing no more than silently dancing. That incident – which was itself a protest of similar arrests made in 2008 – led…

A Very Special Thank-You

A Very Special Thank-You

Friends of the Freedom Center, Ryan Gran and Tiffany Lewis first contacted me in 2009, when I was still working full-time with the Show-Me Institute. They explained that the Missouri Real Estate Commission was trying to shut down their business, Kansas City Premier Apartments, even though all they did was share truthful information about rental property. They also told me they were looking for an attorney who would fight on their behalf out of a shared conviction about the fundamental…

Freedom Center Files Its First Missouri Supreme Court Brief!

Freedom Center Files Its First Missouri Supreme Court Brief!

On March 11, the Freedom Center of Missouri filed a brief on behalf of Kansas City Premier Apartments (KCPA), arguing that the state cannot prevent KCPA from sharing information about rental properties that the government has admitted is truthful and harmless. This case raises incredibly important questions about the constitutional limits that Missourians have placed on their government and calls upon the Missouri Supreme Court to reaffirm citizens’ right “to say, write or publish, or otherwise communicate whatever they will…
